I want to be a better guitar player. And I want to be an official SXSW artist.
Those are big things for me this year. I want these two non-facts to become facts. But just wanting it isn’t enough, obviously. It never is. I can want it all day long but I have to go to my lessons and get around to practicing (nearly) every day. I have to apply to be in SXSW, at the very least. One is under my control, and one is not. So what can I do to further these dreams? Am I stuck in a world of want?
We know there are power in words and beliefs. So how about changing our “want-to-be” to something more, well, powerful?
For example, it feels much less powerful to say “I want to be a better mom today” than it does to say “I will be a better mom today.” “I want to play guitar better” vs. “I will kick ass at practicing for 10 minutes today” makes a huge difference in my mental state. Try it with something you want to change or improve. Rephrase and replace the want. Yes, right now. Take note of how you feel. Do you feel physically a little better? Sit up taller when you say it, too. Breathe deeply, level your gaze, and feel it as you think or say it.
Sometimes, we want things that are out of our control or very long term (like buying a house, adopting a child, or, yeah, getting that gig). What do we say in those cases? I currently have one out of my control: I want to be an official SXSW artist. I’ve wanted it for a long time. But I cannot let that get ahold of me. I have to – I WILL do- everything I can to be my best, and I cannot worry with that want. I will change “I want to be an official South by artist” to “I will be a powerful networker and performer during SXSW this year.” Wow! I feel better already!
Help stoke your OWN fire, right now!
THE WILL MANIFESTO
I will work harder today.
I will be better than yesterday.
I will be a team player.
I will only compete with myself.
I will love myself.
I will keep it fun.
I will do something nice for someone else.
I will look my best.
I will be kind, no matter what.
I will smile.
I will lift others up.
I will promote peace and love.
I will be the bigger person.
I will step outside my comfort zone.
I will follow my own path.
I will ignore fear.
I will risk.
I will believe in my own magic.
