Yes, what you play is important. Your repetitions and your focus majorly affect your output. But let’s take a moment to talk about HOW you “play” it when it comes to rocking your own personal power.
I often get in a strum-rut. This means that on guitar, I tend toward the same rhythm patterns over and over, even when I am playing simple-old power chords….and it’s boring. I have to work hard to even find a slightly different strum or variation of the same chords (because many songs have the same chords). For instance, my song “Permanent Red,” is made up of the same chords as one of my longtime acoustic stand-bys, 4 Non Blondes “What’s Up,” (…pause…let’s take a sec to appreciate the great Linda Perry, too, can we just? #dreamproducer. Sorry, tangent.). When you listen to both songs, though, they sound completely different, and that’s because they have completely different strum patterns. (I tend to base my chord progressions on ones from songs I know I can sing, hence, in this case, my A/B-minor/D progression.)
You may tell yourself something over and over but practicing varying rhythms is what can make it resonate. Otherwise, it can get monotonous and lose its vibrancy and meaning. Start experimenting with ways you can make yourself more powerful with different rhythms. You may be repeating one sentence, but what if you simply stated it in a different way?
For instance, let’s take something like our previous mantra, “I refuse to allow negative thoughts to destroy my harmony and power,” and re-rhythm that into some variations, like the following.
Strum Variations for Personal Power:
-My own power is strong and harmonious and affects others positively.
-I refuse to let negativity take over. I will focus hard on strength, power and harmony.
-I own my thoughts and power, and I will not let negativity in.
These are just a few remix ideas. You’ll come up with your own variations; just remember that when you find yourself getting on auto-pilot with your repetitions, reconfigure them into other patterns, and what’s been done before will suddenly become exciting and fresh, and your mind and body will take note and act accordingly, even setting new movements, fresh melodies, and your own personal power in motion!
