As long as we are prepping to unplug this June, we should talk about unplug-wear.
Yeah. I just made that up. But let’s roll with it.
Anyone who knows me knows I am a hat freak. And it’s not just for style purposes- it’s because I am also a freak about staying out of the sun. And we all know that there’s some sun involved when we unplug, because being in nature and connecting with the air and the earth is crucial to the process. But more on that in another post.
Why, ever, neglect your style? I say NEVER! So here’s your resident hat freak on the looks I currently like.
Almost any style goes, no matter your preference. I should also mention, however, I recommend clearing out or storing any traditional fedora styles (think old-style JT). There are fresher ways to rock the hat.
Here’s a roundup of some of my current favorites to stay out of the sun and in with the style this summer. Everything comes in other color options, too, but I just love black.
Eugenia Kim “Leave A Message” sun hat, $455. So luxe, so cute. Too pricey?
Well then, Nordstrom’s got yer back. They straight-up knocked it off with their “Come Sail Away” BP floppy straw hat, $26.
Personally, I am a big fan of the baseball cap, but I am ultra picky about fit. I made this one myself with some splatter paint and the whole thing cost me less than $10. Michael’s Craft Store or JoAnn’s has great fitting caps that I like. I go with black and shiny black paint. E-Z.
Painting a straw one is an option, too. Maison Michel did this a while back and I still think it’s fresh, so try it out with a less-expensive hat and customize it with your own colors.
Urban Outfitters almost always has these, $39, and they’re a great option for a) black or natural and b) crushable. They’re made of a nubby jute fabric which is nothing in the care department.
Need another lush straw option? Try this one on for size, $330. Barney’s has an easy return policy, too, so it’s not too much of a commitment if the fit is off.
I’m not gonna forget Forever 21, though. They have a pretty decent selection, including this nice little number for $14.90, but ordering a hat online can be very tricky, as you well know. So if you have the gumption to pop in a Forever 21, then check out the hats. They have some cute styles and I have bought several there over the years, so they can fit.
Dudes and ladies: I am a HUGE fan of the Bailey of Hollywood hat in BILLY. Yes, it says fedora, but it’s actually a rolled-porkpie style. It’s lightweight, can take a beating, and unisex. I steal my (bald) husband’s all the time. I wear a M or L (my extensions take up space!); he wears a L or XL. Latte, black, navy and ultramarine are all great stand-bys.
I also dig Goorin Bros’ Big John in navy as a unisex option. However, beware: these are super stiff. But they may break in over time. I couldn’t hang with it but I saw an older dude in it the other day and I must say, it elevated his look immensely.
But, m’ladies, if you’re looking for the real-deal pack-it and totally block the sun with UPF 50+, though, invest in a Helen Kaminski wide-brim bucket hat. I used to buy one every year or two and have never regretted it. Great for a trip to the beach! I usually do the taupe.
Happy hatting, friends! What’s your favorite? Let everyone know!
