One of my New Year’s resolutions is to really cut my technology time down. I am constantly on my phone, texting or reading an article, or Instagramming, or on Facebook…..you name it! It’s a total time suck and I am afraid my kids are picking up on my bad habit as well. I am addicted. There, I said it! Any suggestions on how to disengage from this technology stronghold?
Rip It From My Hands Already
Oh, technology is wonderful! I am sure there are some interesting things you are using it for, right? I like to stalk people on Facebook after a nice glass of Brut myself. Funny how time changes everyone but me. Cheers to that!
Ok, let’s be real. I one-hundred-percent think that this resolution is a fantastic one. We spend so much time, myself included, in a cyber-life; as a result, we have lost the importance of human contact. That’s true for me, and I can sense that many of my coworkers and family members are experiencing the same thing. It’s easier to chime in on a discussion online. We can say things there that we can’t necessarily say face to face. Yet the whole point of conversation is to understand each other better and not try to be something we are not.
To get off the grid, I challenge you to do a couple of very simple things. When you are eating a meal with anyone, whether home or out, turn off your phone and keep it out of sight the ENTIRE meal. You’ll be amazed at what that can do for your attention level and conversation. If you are so busy looking at your phone, you are not present in what is happening at that moment.
Also, to add an extra layer of not texting while driving protection, turn your phone off in the car. If you need it for an emergency it’s there. But you can resist texting the little things and details that pop into your head. And keep in mind the example that sets for your kids down the road.
Lastly, try to set a time each night to shut everything down. I love the last part of the day to spend uninterrupted with my hubby. It’s a date night every night with our glass of wine and a snuggle just talking about plans, dreams, etc.
You can do it! And these little steps will really help you reach an attainable- and utterly worthwhile- goal. Just make sure you log on long enough to read Beat Babe and have a glass of Brut!
