Any holiday or school break always seems to lead to lots of drinking and eating poorly… more than usual, that is. I say to myself every year that I am going to do better and be more mindful. Well, once again I am in full panic mode as my pants are really not fitting right now and I can’t resist a good margarita. Any tips on how to get back on track?
Oh girlfriend, I feel your pain! Every weekend seems to bring more parties, get-togethers, and an onslaught of food and drink, and now we have spring break looming! Sunday mornings I routinely wake up with a renewed vision for my week, then 4 o’clock rolls around, I haven’t been to the grocery store and my better half suggests Mexican and I fold like a dirty shirt. Shall we imbibe with one more margarita just to behold what we need to do? We’ll be good and have a skinny…
First, don’t be so hard on yourself. I have struggled with moderation during the holidays for as long as I can remember. I’ve done the holidays many ways: balls to the wall partying, starving myself, and the best option, everything in moderation. These are my thoughts: life is really short. I mean, like, blink-of-an-eye short. Ferris Bueller would agree when I say that if you don’t enjoy yourself with your friends and family during these times, you may be selling yourself really short. I am not saying that you drink 3 bottles of wine and finish off your steak dinner with shortcake every night, but geez, let loose a bit!
Ok, now that we’ve got that part settled, let’s check in on our margarita. God, I love margaritas! Baby steps are key in this scenario, because you already know what you need to do. I like to make a meal plan for week and do a lot of all prep so that I am not starving with no healthy options in the house. Exercise is key, too. Make a designated time every day to sweat. It’s so important to feel like you are taking the best care of your body. And finally, say no. It’s ok to say no to invitations from friends when you’re really trying to clean up your act. It’s much easier to eat healthfully when you’re not out drinking. Inhibitions are low and queso is always a good idea at that point.
I have confidence in you! Let’s finish this margarita and not have another one for a bit. Pretty soon, you’ll see the old you coming back- and that’ll motivate you even more.
