When I opened my private practice five years ago this month, I was following a dream of bringing healing into people’s lives in a more accessible way. I never could have imagined the unintended positive consequences that my work has brought me. The deep connections I have made in my community, with clients, fellow teachers, and even strangers has been profound and life-changing.
The word connect comes from the Latin roots con, together, and nectere, bind, which then gives us the Latin word connectere–which means to be united physically.
Finding connection is what we are all searching for.
We want to be seen and heard, to know that we are supported by others, and that we are a part of something bigger than ourselves. For this to become our reality, we must participate daily by engaging in practices that allow us to physically unite our bodies, minds, and spirits if we want to truly experience connection in our lives.
Connection goes both ways. It is something we must first find within ourselves, so that we can then find it outside of ourselves. Have you ever experienced a time when you felt depressed and sad? You may look back and recall not feeling connected to anything or anyone, and feeling forgotten or unloved. This is because in order to attract and connect with anything external, you must do the internal work first.
If you cannot love and connect with yourself, how can you expect anyone to love and connect with you?
Meditation and insight are a huge part of my life. They are tools I use each day to check-in as to where in my life I am not connected to my Creator, my soul, my work, my relationships, and in life in general. When we are out of harmony on the inside, our outside world reflects this back to us, and in sometimes very painful ways. But when we are in harmony, life just flows effortlessly.
If you are currently feeling disconnected in your life, here are some tips to use as a daily check-in with yourself and your emotional state of being.
As you begin practicing and using these tips, you will begin to cultivate a new awareness when disconnection is occurring, and you will also begin making more connections between your internal emotional state and how that is being reflected back to you in your life.
Find connection within, with these 4 tips:
- Before getting out of bed in the morning, take a moment with your eyes still closed to breathe slowly and notice how you are feeling
- Next, set an intention for the day such as “Today is a good day” or “I am connected.”
- As you move through your day, anytime you feel stressed or not like yourself, take a moment to step away from your work, get some fresh air, take a few long, intentional breaths, and go back to what you were doing once you feel more centered.
- Before closing your eyes for the night, spend two minutes going over what you are grateful for from your day—even situations which seemed negative, since they too are important opportunities for growth. Allow your mind to marinate in a state of harmony and gratitude all night long so that you then wake up with a more peaceful mindset.
