It can be challenging to sustain inspiration and motivation. What can help us?
By the time summer rolls around, our attention moves to ditching work, dreaming of vacation, and time by the pool. But I believe these “slacking off” moments are when we find the most inspiration and motivation. When our minds can relax, inspiration flows in!
In meditation, there is a term called pattern interrupt. When we are sitting on our meditation cushion or chair, trying to focus, and thoughts enter into our minds, we go back to the breath as our focus—thus creating a pattern interrupt.
We are literally teaching ourselves to think and focus in a more disciplined manner, and interrupting old thought patterns so that we can create new ones.
As we strengthen our meditation practice, the lessons learned on the cushion begin to permeate into all areas of our lives. This idea of pattern interruptions is key in helping us to never lose our inspiration and motivation. It’s also a reminder that when we feel stuck, burned out, or experience mental fatigue, that we have the ability to purposefully interrupt life so we can re-energize it.
Since summer is about fun, play, and taking it easy, my list of tips is short and sweet. You may use these suggestions to interrupt the normal, patterned flow of your life, and allow a inspiration to flow into your spirit in the months ahead.
1. DO NOTHING
Allow yourself to enjoy doing nothing without guilt. Really!
Commit to turning your phone off one or more days a week, and enjoy your day with no interruptions.
3. BE IN NATURE
Go to the ocean, walk in a forest, visit the mountains. Whatever inspires you in nature—go to that place. In my opinion, there is nothing that will inspire you more than Mother Nature.
4. READ A GREAT BOOK
Get lost in a book. Use your imagination. Gain new knowledge.
5. DO SELF-CARE
Give back to your body. Self-care is not pampering. It is one of the most important things you can do for your health (if you don’t believe me Google the benefits of massage). And if you are looking for guidance in incorporating more self-care into your life, please visit my website, www.randimarks.com. I would love to help you.
