Merriam-Webster defines balance as having mental and emotional steadiness as well as physical equilibrium. As a reformed Type A personality, I used to get high off of multi-tasking, over-working, and never saying no. I was committed to everything and everyone except my own inner peace.
It took traumatic events, many losses, and illness to realize that burning the candle at both ends was not how I wanted to live anymore. Meditation showed up in my life, and turned out to be my greatest teacher in finding balance—not just within myself, but in all things, big or small.
There are many books out there written to help us find peace in our lives. There are workshops and seminars to attend, and we find ourselves casting our fishing line in as many different directions as we can hoping to somehow reel in the magical quick fix answer to our problems.
These are wonderful tools to help us along on our path, but what most of us overlook is that the magic has been inside us all along— we were just never taught how to tap into it. Until we make the choice every single day to carve out time for ourselves, to sit in reflection, to surrender, and to breathe—balance will elude us.
“When you lose touch with your inner stillness, you lose touch with yourself. When you lose touch with yourself, you lose yourself in the world.” -Eckhart Tolle
In the Bhagavad Gita, an ancient Hindu text, Lord Krishna says,”Yogastha Kuru Karmani”— Establish yourself in oneness, and then perform action. These words are thousands of years old, yet they still resonate and hold relevance today. No longer can we expect our lives to be balanced, we must actively participate in making them such.
We start with the breath and the choice to sit with ourselves, even if for just one minute a day. I encourage you to commit to this exercise every day for the next two weeks, and feel what even a tiny amount of stillness can do for your life.
If the practice of meditation is something you are new to and are ready to explore, or if you already have a practice and want to take it deeper, I would love to see you in one of my upcoming classes or workshops in Austin, Texas.
